EDT selected as lead provider for two new National Professional Qualifications

The NPQs are specialist and leadership programmes which are designed to support teachers and leaders in their professional development and empower them to create conditions for change at their levels of control, whether that be the classroom, department, school or trust. Our first two NPQ cohorts commenced in November 2021 and February 2022 and we look forward to welcoming further cohorts in the next academic year.

The new National Professional Qualifications for Early Years Leadership (NPQEYL) and Leading Literacy (NPQLL) will launch in Autumn 2022. The NPQEYL is for leaders who are, or are aspiring to be, managers of Private, Voluntary and Independent nurseries, headteachers of school-based or maintained nurseries, or childminders with leadership responsibilities. The NPQLL is for teachers who have, or are aspiring to have, responsibilities for leading literacy across a school, year group, key stage or phase.

We are excited to be partnering with two expert organisations who will work with us to design and deliver the two new NPQs.

For the NPQEYL, we will be working in partnership with the Pen Green Centre. Felicity Dewsbery, Deputy Head of Pen Green Centre, commented: ‘The Pen Green Centre is delighted to be working with Education Development Trust and the Department for Education to help in the design and delivery of the new National Professional Qualification in Early Years Leadership. Pen Green has worked with EY practitioners across the sector for many years and will be drawing from one of their published books ‘Democratising leadership in the early years’ within the framework which illustrates how settings and practitioners can develop and maintain forms of leadership which foster collaborative practices across and within settings and services.’

For the NPQLL, we are partnering with the National Literacy Trust. Fiona Evans, Director of School Programmes from the National Literacy Trust, says: ‘At the National Literacy Trust we have been working for many years to support excellent teachers to become leaders of literacy at both primary and secondary schools across the country, and are keen to see more teachers develop the knowledge and skills to create school-wide change and impact through literacy. We are therefore greatly excited to be working in partnership with Education Development Trust and the Department for Education to design and deliver the new NPQ for Leading Literacy. Research shows that effective leadership of literacy teaching in schools can be transformational for pupils and impact on their academic success across all subjects.’
