Closer to home: how to help schools in low- and middle-income countries respond to children’s language needs

By Helen Pinnock, Pamela Mackenzie, Elizabeth Pearce, Catherine Young

These guidelines are for anyone active in education in low- or middle-income countries where school language is causing problems for children’s learning.

The guide offers advice on how to make school systems in low- and middle-income countries work better in today’s multilingual world. This means bringing the languages that children understand and use at home into school, and using these as the basis for learning new and unfamiliar languages.

Bringing education closer to home in this way will make learning familiar and straightforward for children, boosting learning outcomes for all. In many cases taking such an approach will involve several changes to school systems over time. This guide provides practical and realistic ideas on how these changes can be made.
