National Tutoring Programme

Continued professional development for tutors

In addition to our National Tutoring Programme (NTP) Training Course, Education Development Trust also provides continued professional development for School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors.

Online Seminars

EDT offers a range of online events to provide further high-quality training and support for School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors.

  • Seminars: Our interactive seminars draw on the most up to date, relevant research to provide practical guidance and resources to support School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors in their delivery of academic support for the pupils who need it most.
  • Tutoring Spotlight On...: These evening webinars take a deep-dive into high-leverage areas of tutoring and mentoring practice through the eyes of an expert in that field. Participants are invited to pre-submit their questions prior to the event and hear them answered live.

Events are run on a half-termly basis at a range of times to suit different schedules. All School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors registered on the NTP Training Course can access these free of charge via the Tutor Development Portal.

Tutor Development Portal

The Tutor Development Portal is designed to complement the NTP training course and can be accessed by School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors during and after their training. The portal contains a great range of resources including training videos, subject-specific support guides and wellbeing resources.

Registered School-Led Tutors and Academic Mentors can access the Tutor Development Portal here. Please note that users must be logged in to be able to view the portal. Find out more information about how to register yourself and prospective tutors here.

Award in Professional Knowledge for Tutoring

What's the Award in Professional Knowledge for Tutoring?

  • Two short assessments with optional preparatory work.
  • For NTP Training Course graduates. Open to anyone who has completed the NTP Training Course since 2021.
  • Flexible and self-directed. It is recommended that tutors aim to complete all examinations within around three months, perhaps pacing themselves with one exam per half term. However, many candidates will find they can comfortably complete this unit within a shorter timeframe.
  • Low cost, especially when compared to other qualifications for Teaching Assistants (TAs) and Higher-Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs), at just £110.

What are the benefits?

  • Gain recognition: Tutors can showcase their strong professional knowledge in teaching and learning gained through the Training Course, specifically in the context of their tutoring responsibilities.
  • Connect research to practice: Tutors will demonstrate their ability to bridge the gap between research and practice as they apply evidence-informed methods to enhance their tutoring effectiveness within their unique context.
  • Boost confidence levels in providing high-quality support and interventions for pupils.
