Education workforce development

Strengthening the education workforce to ensure every school benefits from motivated, skilled, and supported teachers and leaders

Explore our current programmes

We believe that every education setting should be filled with skilled practitioners – whether they are early childhood educators, early career teachers, or experienced leaders. We develop the capacity of educators across the breadth of their careers, from initial training and early career support to senior leadership development.

Through our evidence-informed programmes, we are proud to work with a dynamic range of individual educators around the world, but our expertise goes beyond that. We know what it takes to transform an education workforce at system level: expertly translating policy into successful implementation plans, and delivering them with real impact. Our work on education workforce development therefore encompasses evidence-based policy reform, competency frameworks, leadership development curricula, and delivery of professional development activities – all centred on better meeting learners’ needs.

Global expertise, localised reach

Our experience in this field is truly global – from providing continuous professional development for educators in the UK, to supporting effective strategies for teaching literacy in Zimbabwe, to building the capacity of teachers of refugees in Lebanon.

UK

In the UK, we are privileged to have worked alongside the Department for Education (DfE) for many years on a range of national-level teacher development programmes. This spans from preparing early career teachers for the profession through the Early Career Framework, to developing a new generation of passionate STEM teachers through the Future Teaching Scholars programme. We also deliver a range of National Professional Qualifications on behalf of the DfE, that serve educators at all levels from those just starting to develop their leadership skills, to experienced leaders taking their next step.

Our teacher development work in the UK serves to improve teaching and learning on a national scale, addressing sector challenges including recruitment and retention, while working to give pupils the very best education, no matter their background.

Sub-Saharan Africa

Our history is also deeply rooted in supporting educators in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our long legacy in the region includes improving learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy, developing teachers’ skills in gender-responsive pedagogy and inclusive practices, and training school leaders to drive systemic change.

Our impact in Sub-Saharan Africa is wide-reaching:

  • Improved quality of education for over 5.5 million learners in Ethiopia through the TARGET programme.
  • Improved learning outcomes in English and mathematics in Rwanda through the Building Learning Foundations programme, impacting 5 million learners.
  • Enhanced teacher effectiveness and better learning outcomes for 1 million learners across Zimbabwe through the TEACH programme.
  • Training and professional development for over 2,000 teachers across more than 500 schools in Kenya through the UK government’s Girls’ Education Challenge. Our work supported the programme’s overall aim of reaching 500,000 marginalised girls in seven countries by 2024, equip girls and boys, teachers and leaders with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to build a more gender-equitable society.
Middle East and Asia

Much of our workforce development efforts in the Middle East and Asia focus on engaging students to become dynamic learners and proficient English language speakers.

For over 40 years, through CfBT Education Services in Brunei, we have recruited high-quality teachers to teach in Brunei's schools and supported its Ministry of Education in delivering effective English language teaching. We have developed a range of English-language-related education, assessment, and professional development projects across the country, and now have a Centre of Excellence for English Teaching in Brunei, highlighting our high standards and best practice.

In the Middle East, our Evidence-Based Supervision (EBS) programme supports Ministry of Education supervisors to use the best available research-based evidence when coaching teachers to improve their practice. Funded by our Alexandria Schools Trust, EBS has enabled the governments of Egypt, Lebanon, and Jordan to build the capacity of teachers and supervisors to use English as a medium of instruction – while improving their teaching strategies and techniques.
